The pants have been treated with Insect Shield technology and a cinch cord at the ankles to protect your legs from bugs and the elements. (The active ingredient of Insect Shield is Permethrin, a man-made version of the natural insect repellent found in certain chrysanthemum plants.) The Insect Shield will last through 70 washings.
